Welcome to my blog. Finding balance between  photography, family and everything in between.

Master Bathroom Remodel

Master Bathroom Remodel

If you know me at all, you know that I have a hobby of remodeling my house. This also means re-decorating and *ahem going through furniture like its disposable. This can be a very expensive hobby and not sure I recommend it.

We moved into our forever (we hope!) home in 2014 and have been slowly working on getting it exactly the way we want. We have completed almost every room (still have kids bathroom and laundry room). One of the last priorities for us was our master bathroom. It really shouldn’t have been at the end of the list BUT we knew it was going to be one of the more expensive projects and it felt daunting. I won’t lie, I HATED our master bathroom. I mean it was mayyyybe fine when the house was built. But there are pieces that I can not for the life of me figure out what the heck they were thinking. The tile stairs to get into the odd shaped tub? The fact that the tub faucet was not reachable unless you were IN THE TUB (this is counter productive). Just to name a few of my irritations.

Let’s all admire the before photos. You are welcome to say it’s not THAT bad. Fine. But my little farmhouse style was weeping inside.

Ok fiiiiiine. It’s not “that” bad. But did you see the shower CAVE. Yeah that. Anyway. It was one of my least favorite rooms in the house which was honestly a bummer. Now on to the good stuff. Very few times have we hired out for any work. We (ahem…Dan) usually does all the work himself. This time though, I really felt like it was more than we wanted to tackle as we were going to rip out the tub, tile and shower. It was going to be a TON of work and I really wanted someone else to hold the reins (as long as I owned the design of course). We decided to go ahead and bite the bullet and hired a local family owned remodel company Crystal Remodeling. They are based in Oregon City but work in all of the Portland/Metro area. I really wanted the special care that a local company could provide. I mean let’s be honest…I’M PICKY. I’d like to think I was pretty easy going. But. (shhh)

I worked directly with their project manager, Zach whom was there to walk through anything I needed and make sure that it was within our budget. We did opt to do a little of the work ourselves (you know I mean Dan) to save a bit but not much, the bulk of the work was completed by Crystal Remodeling. The main thing Dan did was paint the vanity black and switch out the hardware. We had planned on replacing it. But in the end its a custom built piece with plenty of storage that we figured that if we just updated it we would love it. (YES!)

“Our form of relaxing is taking on new projects for the house. It’s not work for us, its’ a true labor of love.”
— M. Hellman

On to the destruction. It was like a war zone. But a GOOD ONE. Since we were working from home and its COVID we couldn’t really go anywhere. But it was quick and I am convinced the Master of Destroyers aka “Demolition Dudes” have the BEST job. I mean…having a bad day? You get to break things AND get paid for it. Win/Win. They were quick and efficient and finding all the Ugly removed made my day….or actually my week! They were quickly my best friends (or at least that’s what I’m telling myself).

Note: The stair art was a reminder to my son. It didn’t work. But hey, I tried.

During the demo I heard laughter. I could hear the Demo Dudes cracking up all the way downstairs. They call me up and show me this gem they found inside the floor boards.

What the heck right? I mean they did find 5000 beer cans in the wall (insert eye roll here) but this was a new one for sure. Poor birdies. They had to have been there since the house was built.

Ready for the after photos? If you have made it this far (or maybe you just skipped to the end) you are a rockstar. First, I do want to say…I LOVE LOVE LOVE the remodel. Everything is perfect and it looks like a fancy hotel (only better). I still can’t believe it’s finished and mine.

If you prefer a video walk through with my extra commentary this is for you:

So what do you think? I am so happy with my completed bathroom and want to give a HUGE thank you to the entire staff at Crystal Remodeling for putting up with me (of course) but for also paying attention to even the small details that only a crazy photographer may obsess over. Everything is exactly how it should be. If you are looking to remodel something in your home I highly recommend you give them a call and be sure to tell Zach HI for me!
